The Silophone organisation

Since June 2001, the Silophone project has been directed by the Silophone organization, a non-profit association created to assume responsibility for the project from its inaugural partners. The organisation's mandate is to maintain and expand Silophone and to stimulate cultural activity around Silo #5.

[The User]
conception and artistic direction
[The User] is a Montréal-based artistic collaboration between architect Thomas McIntosh and composer Emmanuel Madan. Since its formation in 1998, [The User] has been creating audiovisual works which explore humanitys relationship with technology. A preoccupation with obsolescence, the flipside of progress, runs through [The User]s work.

SAT
development
The Société des arts technologiques (SAT), a centre devoted to the development of digital culture, hosted Silophone during its development phase as part of its artist residency program. SAT continues to play an active role in the on-line presence of Silophone by providing its network resources and expertise.

Quartier Éphémère
production
The Montréal-based cultural organization Quartier Éphémère was the initial producer for the Silophone project, from 1999 until June 2001. Quartier Éphémère became involved in Silophone because of its long-standing affinity with projects of this type, which temporarily reinvest vacant sites and abandoned industrial spaces for cultural ends.

Radio-Canada
official broadcaster
Le Navire Night, a weekly radio program on Radio-Canadas Chaîne culturelle (100.7 FM in Montréal), features innovative music and sound experimentation. Le Navire Night was the official broadcaster of the inaugural year of Silophone. The programs producer and host, Hélène Prévost, assumed the artistic direction of one of the concert events and invited two Canadian composers to conceive works for the event.

technological partner
Bell lent its considerable expertise and experience in cutting-edge communications technologies to the Silophone project, not only by offering its services in the form of high-speed Internet, high-fidelity audio, telephony, and wireless communication, but also by becoming an active partner in the research and development for the Silophone instrument. Centre dhistoire de Montréal
exhibit
From June 29 to December 3 2000, the Centre dhistoire de Montréal featured a special exhibition presenting the history of Grain elevator #5 from its construction to the present day.
This exhibition of artifacts, photographs and videos helped provide historical context for the Silophone project while demystifying the enigma which the building represents for the public.

Héritage Montréal

Héritage Montréal is an independent organization that promotes and protects the architectural, rural, urban and social heritage of Montréal neighbourhoods and other communities in the metropolitan area. The organization aims to promote architecture and urbanism that are in keeping with the public interest and that are based on social, cultural and economic values, in order to ensure the quality of the heritage we pass down to future generations. Héritage Montréal contributed to the programming of Silophones inaugural year by organizing guided tours of the area adjacent to the Silo #5 site.

Docomomo Québec
architectural charette
On the initiative of Docomomo, four teams of renowned Montréal architects and designers were invited to explore the future of Silo #5 through architectural projects. The major challenge was to propose projects that respect the architectural integrity of this vast structure and ensure its economic viability. The resulting proposals were presented as part of a public forum. Docomomo Québec, a non-profit association founded in 1990, is affiliated with Docomomo International, an organization dedicated to the DOcumentation and COnservation of the architecture of the MOdern MOvement, and represented in some forty countries and regions around the world. Docomomo Québec, a regional work group, strives to create a greater awareness and appreciation of modern architecture in Québec, and to preserve buildings and structures that are representative of the province.
AQPI
public forum
The Association québécoise pour le patrimoine industriel organized a public forum in October 2000, bringing together various parties involved in the architectural, heritage, and art communities in an effort to discuss the future of Silo #5. The AQPIs overall mission is to promote the study, knowledge and visibility of industrial heritage. Its specific goals are to promote conservation: sites, buildings, machinery, artifacts, archives, iconography, and audiovisual documents through registers, documentary or oral investigations or any other appropriate means.
